Redtail Rock
In the heart of Big Bend National Park is a massive basin circled round by the Chisos Mountains. Inside can be found rare wildlife, an endless array of desert vegetation, and stunning cliffs and rock formations. I hope to some day have a chance to capture many of these in a series of paintings. “Redtail Rock” is the first of this series.
Despite my continued desire to use detail selectively, what captured my attention in this scene was the vast amount and variety of texture. From the distant cliff walls to the thorny bushes, everything was bristling with texture. Early on, I decided I would recreate as much of it as I could, and I have concluded with possibly my most detailed painting yet. This fascinating rock formation dominated the landscape, and I immediately pictured a red-tailed hawk returning to its nest high above the basin floor.
